What is therapy like? What am I supposed to do or say?

Therapy looks different depending on the circumstances and who your therapist is. Most people come in and discuss what’s currently going on in their lives, what has happened to them in the past, or what they want life to be like in the future. Sometimes people have a really clear idea of what’s going wrong, where they need support, and what they need to process. Sometimes people have a vague feeling that something is off, but they don’t know how to describe it.

In my perspective, therapy is about you, so I won’t do most of the talking or give you endless advice. That’s what self-help books and motivational speakers are for. In therapy, you are invited to explore, practice, and consider new ideas, feelings, and experiences, and I am simply there to guide you home to yourself. It’s my job to facilitate self-exploration, discernment of what’s true and helpful, and the release of emotional burdens you haven’t figured out how to release on your own. I am trained to strike a fine balance between challenging you enough to grow without pushing you to become unproductively overwhelmed. I care way more about therapy being helpful than I do about me being right, so I regularly check in to see how what I’m saying lands with you.

How long does therapy last?

This depends greatly on what’s going on with you. Some people are in therapy for a month, some for 5 years, some for their whole lives. I encourage clients to consider their goals for therapy, reflect on whether therapy is helping them work toward their goals, and holistically evaluate what the most important and effective types of support is right now. You are not obligated to continue seeing me if you don’t want to! There are a lot of ways to deal with and heal from life- mental health therapy is simply one of those ways. Remember that I also want to see you reach your goals, so I will also be assessing throughout our time together if we are making positive shifts and make suggestions or provide resources when appropriate.

Payment

I offer 55 minute sessions at $150 and 90-minute sessions at $225

I accept cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express. I also accept FSA and HSA cards.

I do not take any insurance at this time. However, I can provide a superbill for individual counseling. This is a form that you give to your insurance directly for reimbursement. If your insurance plan has out-of-network coverage for mental health services, then you are likely entitled to reimbursement for therapy services. Ask me directly about this option if you are interested in using your insurance for counseling with me.
